Marriage Certificate

A Marriage Certificate is a legal document that certifies the marital relationship between husband and wife. It is very important to obtain after marriage because it serves as the official proof of marriage and is useful in many areas of life such as passport, visa, banking, insurance, property, and legal matters. If ever there is a dispute or denial of the marital relationship, the Marriage Certificate acts as the strongest evidence.

In India, a Marriage Certificate can be issued under two laws—the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 and the Special Marriage Act, 1954. To obtain it, the bride and groom need to apply at the registrar’s office with their identity proofs, photos, address proof, and witnesses. After verification, the government issues the certificate. This document not only provides legal security to husband and wife but also strengthens their identity and rights in social and personal life.

What is a Marriage Certificate?

A Marriage Certificate is an official legal document that proves that a couple is lawfully married. It is issued by the government and works as valid evidence of marriage.

Documents Required for Marriage Certificate

  1. Aadhaar Card of Groom & Bride (Identity proof)

  2. PAN Card of Groom & Bride (Additional ID proof)

  3. Passport Size Photos of both bride and groom

  4. Marriage Affidavit – A declaration that the marriage took place with mutual consent

  5. Proof of Wedding – Wedding photos, invitation card, etc.

  6. Witness with Aadhaar Card – At least one witness is required (usually 2–3 witnesses are asked)

  7. Address Proof – Voter ID, Driving License, Electricity Bill, etc. of both

  8. Age Proof – Birth Certificate, School Leaving Certificate, or any valid government document

Process of Getting a Marriage Certificate

  1. Fill Application – Visit the Marriage Registrar’s Office (or apply online, if available).

  2. Submit Documents – Attach all required proofs and photos.

  3. Witness Verification – Witnesses must be present with their ID proof.

  4. Registrar Verification – The registrar will check all details and documents.

  5. Issuance – After successful verification, the Marriage Certificate is issued.

Importance of Marriage Certificate Correction/Update

If there is any mistake or required change in a Marriage Certificate, you can update/correct it by submitting an affidavit and valid documents at the Registrar’s Office.

Why Update or Correction is Needed?

Sometimes mistakes or changes occur in the Marriage Certificate, such as:

  • Wrong spelling of names

  • Incorrect date of birth

  • Change of address

  • Error in witness names or photographs

  • Wrong date of marriage

In such cases, Correction (fixing errors) or Update (adding/changing new information) is necessary.


 Process of Marriage Certificate Update/Correction

  1. Application – Submit a request for correction/update at the Marriage Registrar’s Office.

  2. Proof Documents – Provide supporting documents for the correct details, such as:

    • Birth Certificate / School Certificate – for correct name or date of birth

    • Address Proof (Aadhaar, Voter ID, Electricity Bill, etc.) – for address changes

    • Gazette Notification / Affidavit – if the name has been officially changed

  3. Affidavit – A declaration (notarized) with the correct information.

  4. Submission – Submit the application with documents; the Registrar will verify.

  5. Correction Certificate – After verification, the corrected or updated Marriage Certificate is issued.
